The etymology of "Sentient" means that to be alive is to sense, and the greatest of our senses is scent itself. In French, sentir still means both "to feel" and "to smell." Of the senses, scent is the original mode of perception for all life, before sight, touch and taste. As our most primitive mode of perception, scent was evolved from chemical receptors in single-celled organisms reacting to differences in chemical gradients, orienting towards sustenance or danger. For its primacy, our olfactory system has a direct link to our emotional/memory centers of the brain, the limbic system, raw and unfiltered in a way the other senses are unable to be. This is the reason smells can trigger such immediate, visceral emotional responses and vivid memories. In this world that's losing connection to what it means to be alive, Nascent seeks a rebirth through scent.
